Eliminate center console "creaking"

My center console creaks around the shifter and I find it annoying. Others have mentioned their center armrest creaks as well, mine does it slightly but it's getting worse. As the cars age, my assumption is dirt coupled with the products drying out and expanding/contracting with temps is the culprit.

Today I addressed both issues and it took about 30 minutes.

Tools:
  • Plastic (or similar) pry tool
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Thin adhesive backed felt (from craft store, i.e. Michael's)
  • Phillips screwdriver
I removed the trim around the shifter (many how-to videos for this) basically removing the trim in front of the 12v power supply/ashtray then pulling the trim up and removing the bottom trim for the center console lid. I then cleaned the areas of debris with rubbing alcohol and applied the felt. As the tolerances are tight, using too much felt could cause issues. Pics below show where I applied.

Dude your method for where to place the felt pads under the shift console worded so much better than my original attempt!! Its so bloody quiet now and I love it, thank you!
I am curious though, what's the point of putting the felt pads on the center console lid? Mine personally never makes noise, just everything else haha.

Glad it worked!

The felt under the console lid was to eliminate a slight creaking I had.
