Is this dealer crazy or am I? Sedan 6MT
Went car shopping this past weekend and ran across a 2011 G37 Sedan 6MT. Sticker was 18,899 with 41k miles on it. Looked to be in good shape from the pictures.
Got to the dealer and turns out the car has 63k miles on it (41k was a clerical error but now shows on carfax as a mileage discrepancy) and some decent damage to it. No huge dents but both drivers side wheels have chunks taken out of them (not just rash, but metal scraped off about 1/4" to 1/2" deep several inches around the wheel) as well as about a hand-print sized area of scratches just behind the front drivers side wheel on the fender and the scratches are down through the paint to the metal. Passenger side the mirror had been tagged into something, probably a garage door frame, and the edge of the bumper had a 3"x1" scrape that was down to the primer.
Book value for a 2011 6MT sedan with 41k miles is ~$18-19k at CLEAN RETAIL. I told them for a car with 50% more miles and the damage to it made it most definitely not clean retail. I believe book for clean retail with the correct miles was $17-18k. I offered $16k plus TTL to take into account what about the car was not CLEAN RETAIL and they said in their opinion it was actually in clean retail condition. I understand pre-owned cars will have defects, but normal wear defects like rock chips, nicks on the door, worn leather, HONEST wear to the car. Not an idiot running it into a concrete barrier or something to tear up the wheels and side of the car...
Am I crazy to think this is only worth 16k?
