My "11 g37 premium sedan gets 17 mpg at best on premium, while my "12 mustang v6 convertible gets 24 mpg on regular gas. Both have the same horsepower and the mustang is just as fast as the g37. If this is the best mpg that Infiniti can come up with, I question why I spent more money on it than the mustang, which I enjoy driving more. Both have automatic transmissions.

Only you can answer the question of why you bought the g, a premium sedan that you enjoy driving less vs a mustang.

My g gets 22 in mixed traffic and 29 on the highway.

Maybe you should sell the g and get another mustang. Seriously.

Then OPs point is valid, the g is a good car but it is hard on gas... Much harder than other vehicles that put out similar power figures. Perhaps you designed the 3.7l vq engine and don't like criticism?

No hostility, the op asked a question of why he should have a g, a car that he doesn't enjoy driving. How do you answer that question? Sell the car you don't enjoy.

I didn't design the 3.7l engine, but I don't want my Nissan stock to go down.

I didn't say that I didn't like driving my g37. I said that I enjoyed driving the mustang more. The advantage of the g is that I can put full sized humans in the back seat, which as you probably know you can't do in a mustang. Also I only drive the mustang half a year, as it's a convertible.

Yes, you did say you enjoy driving the g more, but the way the post was worded was nebulous and could mean anything. The g could stink but the stang was ok: or the g is very good but the stang is excellent.

If you are getting 17 mg tops, you either:
1 drive in manhattan 24by 7, or
2 flog the heck out of it on highways,
3 the fuel economy measurement is broken,
4 your car has an issue.

I can't see why the stang would get 7 mpg more, driving it the same as the g, in the same traffic conditions....unless the stang weighs substantially less.

Edit: in my first post I did acknowledge you don't enjoy driving the g as much.

I really didnt see much hostility in his response, but back on topic.

You said you drive the mustang for only half the year. Obviously when the weather is warm. Sometimes fuel blends equate to better mileage (winter vs summer blend gas). Also cars take longer to reach temperature in winter and many people let their cars warm up excessively long. Just want to make sure you're comparing apples to apples.

Also are you using the cars computer to calculate fuel consumption or are you using something like fuely or math to figure it out? Domestic cars are notorious for over estimating mpg. Just some food for thought.

I get just under 23mpg in my G in mixed driving and I don't baby it too much. I don't drive like an asshat either.

I bet you (unknowingly) drive the convertible a bit more sedately. The sensation of speed & acceleration is a bit more apparent in the noisier, open air Mustang. The G is much quieter - and (IMO) you may be driving the quieter car harder.

Coming from a 350zr w/Nismo Exhaust, I do believe I drive my G a bit harder than my previous convertible. I got around 20mpg in my 350, and around 19 in my G. Would probably do better if I traveled on a road that wasn't under construction and crawling with traffic...but I'm not sure if that exists in the DFW area!

Not to split hairs, but the G has 328hp and the Mustang 305. Close, yes, but not the same. The weights are similar as well... 3,618 for the G Sedan and 3,533 for the convertible Mustang.

I agree the G's mileage should be a little better, given there are other V6's that do better.

But I drive aggressively and get 19-20 combined and 23-24 highway. 17 seems really low if you aren't driving it hard.

I agree^. I get mixed city highway about 24 mpg, and I don't drive like an old man. cars tend to run really rich before they are fully warmed up, if your driving the g during winter, the warm up time and if u don't allow it to warm up fully before driving could give crappy mileage.

The uses of the cars do make a difference...

Also, the OP says he has the G because it can carry more people than the Mustang.
That adds several hundred more pounds to the car and will also affect mileage.

BTW, I get 22- 24 with mixed driving.

I am not a G37 but a G35 and i am getting now 24mpg. Maybe you can reset your ECU and don't drive aggressive. My city miles are looking better now after i got the light weight crank pulley. I am still trying it out to see if it really gives you better MPG

Have you been manually calculating your mileage? My former TSX would claim 25+ vs my G just under 20. Manual tracking showed 23+ vs just under 20. One was 2.4L with 201 HP and the 3.7 with 328. Not bad for over 1.6 times the power.

I always say its a matter of perspective. I had a 3.7 in my Jeep Liberty and it got crappy gas milage compared to the G, then I got the Wrangler with the 3.8 and I throw a party if it gets 20 on the highway. Neither one of those vehicles had any where near the power the G does. Its a pretty well know fact that if you are not easy on the gas your in town MPG will not be very high. In fact sometimes I have recorded less than 17, but when my wife drives the car gets around 20 in the city. On the highway there have been times I got under 20 and the wife gets 27 to 29.
